Points to consider when selecting your internet provider

On several occasions we are faced with the decision to change the Internet provider or select one that meets the new company’s needs or that simply satisfies the basic needs not covered by a service contracted.

Although it is complicated, all these parameters must be considered for selection, emphasizing:

1.-The supplier’s technology

Whether optic fiber or radio link, the service quality and the bandwidth that we require will be affected by the selected option. Although fiber optic remains one of the most reliable transmission means , availability can be affected by the routes it travels (aerial or underground) and the response times for its restoration in case of cuts, given that sometimes these jobs require of obtaining a permit for the crews work and the logistics of the maintenance team.

In the case of radio links, the response during failures may be more expeditious but this technology is still very susceptible to falls due to electrical issues, storms, interferences and other random failures very characteristic of the environment.

To date, the technology evolution has allowed radio links to get closer in quality and bandwidth to the fiber, considering the differences between each provider. It may be that in our case we do not have both alternatives, but these details should be considered important for the selection.

2.-The bandwidth

Many times we are attracted by commercial offers that double the competition’s bandwidth speed and often with prices that do not come close to the references we have of the rest of the suppliers in the market.

You have to be very careful, given that these offers can be deceptive when the bandwidth offered may be shared among several users simultaneously or that you can only count on it during low consumption hours.

On the other hand, the metrics that we obtain from online tools can be configured to offer us measurements that make us see that the bandwidth is contracted, although in reality it is not like that.

The advisable thing in these cases is to count on tools that measure the bandwidth that arrives at the company’s router and can show with real parameters that you receive what you pay.

3.-The price

When selecting, do not let an offer or a low price be what determines your decision. The price should be adjusted to what you really expect, considering that often a low price hides shared bandwidth, low quality services or very poor support.

Sometimes support departments spend a lot of time to determine the failure source or adequately inform reasons for the problem affecting the service.

Receive timely information can be precious for your business operation and determinant in your company’s income.

Demand from each supplier detailed information about the service’s quality levels offered and the credits that apply in case of an eventuality, as well as different ways of contact in failures case.

5.-Always hire a backup

The best way to be prepared for any unexpected inconvenience is to hire more than one link, consider that power failures can affect common routes used by more than one telecommunications operator.

The choice of one or two additional links can guarantee the continuity of your critical operations despite the circumstances.

Taking into account these points it is possible that you can make a decision more adjusted to your requirements at the time of changing Internet provider, ensuring that your operation is not affected by details not considered at the time of contracting the service.
